Radjabov wasn’t yet 16 years old, and surprised with an even score in Wijk aan Zee. He won with black against the FIDE Champion in Ponomariov-Radjabov and got close to beating also Karpov with black. After ten of the thirteen rounds he shared third, but dropped a few places in the final rounds. He ended up ahead of Pono and Karpov, was even with Topalov, and only 0.5 behind Kramnik and Ivanchuk.
